Job Vacancy – NNHC Young Leader

North Norfolk HC are looking to develop a pool of Young Leaders who will play a vital role in the development of players at NNHC Juniors training sessions. For the successful candidates it will also offer an opportunity to develop their understanding of the sport they love. The club will also support Young Leaders as they learn about other aspects of the game including umpiring and coaching.

Round 1 of the application process is aimed at 13–18-year-olds and will close at 6pm on 1st September 2021. There may also be further application windows throughout the season.

The Role
NNHC Juniors training sessions focus on game-based learning. Training sessions therefore typically centre around small-sided-games, where teams play each other and then take breaks to work on more technical aspects of their game. Age groups at sessions range from U8s to U12s.
The Young Leader role involves working independently, and with other coaches, to umpire games and coach players. For this reason, applicants are required to be willing to take part in an online England Hockey Level 1 Umpiring Course. The minimum age to take part in this course is 13 years, so all applicants must be at least that age on 1st September. Members of NNHC will have their first umpiring course fee paid for by the club.

The Responsibilities
YL’s will be supported by the rest of the coaching team, and it is hoped that the role will be both challenging and rewarding. Successful candidates will be encouraged to reflect on personal development aims, but the Juniors training sessions require coaches to be able to honour commitments to attendance.

YL’s are NOT expected to attend every week but the club DOES expect YL’s to liaise in advance with head coaches to confirm what dates they can commit to.

The advertised post is for the training held at Sheringham High School (6pm – 7.30pm during term time) on Tuesdays. Successful candidates would be expected to arrive before the session starts to take part in a coaches meeting and help set out pitches. Then welcome players to the session, lead warm-ups and at the end of the session lead warm downs. The 2021-22 season is expected to carry on until 12th, 13th April.

Next steps
All coaches like to have a ‘buddy’ so we encourage the idea of friends applying as pairs for each session. Individual applicants who are willing to be paired up with another YL coach are also welcomed to apply.

Payment
The YL program is intended to be a stimulating and rewarding experience; one which allows participants to develop new skills, at the same time as enhancing those of younger players. At the same time the club appreciates the effort YL’s will make and will pay travel expenses for each session attended.

Those looking to utilise their umpiring skills might be interested that qualified umpires are much in demand, even entry-level matches such as Norfolk Development League games pay umpires a standard match fee of £20 and YL’s would be encouraged to explore this option.

The role may interest those taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh program and the club are happy to provide references and statements for that purpose.

Applications made via email to justinjfreeman@gmail.com by 1st September 2021. Please detail why you want to be part of the team. Young Leaders will be appointed by 4th September and the Juniors training sessions start on 7th September.
